When it comes to achieving the best results from your treatments, understanding contraindications is crucial. Not all treatments are suitable for everyone, and knowing the specifics can help you avoid disappointment and ensure your safety.
Conditions That Prevent Treatment
Certain health conditions can make treatments unsafe or ineffective. Here are the key conditions that could prevent you from undergoing treatment:
Hemophilia or Blood Clotting Issues: Including poor wound healing.
Papulopustular Rosacea: This skin condition can complicate treatments.
Acne Vulgaris (Stages III-IV): Severe acne can interfere with treatment efficacy.
Solar Keratosis: Precancerous skin lesions need careful handling.
Undergoing Chemotherapy or Immunotherapy: These treatments weaken your immune system.
Connective Tissue or Autoimmune Disorders: Such as lupus.
Long-Term Use of Prednisone or Other Steroid Medications: These can increase inflammation.
Pregnancy/Nursing: Certain treatments are not safe during these periods.
HIV/AIDS: A compromised immune system requires special consideration.
Anticoagulants/Blood Thinners: Including Warfarin or aspirin.
Nickel or Stainless Steel Allergies: These materials are often used in treatment tools.
Scleroderma and Collagen Vascular Diseases: These can complicate healing and results.
Solar Keratosis (Repeated for Emphasis): Requires careful treatment.
Conditions Requiring Doctor’s Approval
Some conditions necessitate a doctor’s approval before proceeding with treatments. These include:
Transplant Anti-Rejection Drugs: Require careful monitoring.
Heart Disease: Treatments need to be adjusted to avoid complications.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Especially if treated with medication.
Cancer (Post 12 Months): Treatments can be considered after this period.
Insulin-Dependent Diabetes: Requires specific care to avoid complications.
Conditions Requiring a Waiting Period
Certain conditions need to be completely healed before treatments can start:
Active Bacterial, Fungal, or Viral Skin Infections: Must be cleared before treatment.
Active Herpes (Cold Sores): Take antiviral medication 2 weeks pre and post-treatment for peels and needling.
Warts in the Treatment Area: Must be treated first.
Sunburn in the Treatment Area: Wait until fully healed.
Inflammation or Open Lesions: Must be resolved before treatment.
Waiting Times for Specific Procedures
Different procedures have specific waiting times to ensure safety and effectiveness:
Recent Facial Operations: Wait at least 3 months post-surgery.
Isotretinoin (e.g., Roaccutane): 6-12 months post-treatment.
Tattooing/Cosmetic Tattooing: 3 months.
IPL/Laser Hair Removal: 2 weeks.
IPL Skin Treatments: 2 weeks.
Laser Resurfacing/Ablative: 8 weeks.
Strong Chemical Peels (pH < 3.1): 2 weeks.
Botulinum Toxin: 2 weeks.
Dermal Fillers (Hyaluronic Acid & Vital Hydrate): 2 weeks.
Dermal Fillers (Sculptra & Radiesse): 6 weeks.
Stop Using/Taking 1 Week Before Treatment
To ensure the best outcomes, stop using or taking the following 1 week before your treatment:
Fish Oils, Plant Oils, Omega 3s
Ginseng, Ginkgo Biloba, St John’s Wort
Retinoids
Topical Antibiotics
Exfoliants and/or AHA or BHA
Benzoyl Peroxide/Adapalene (Differin)
Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid
Anti-Inflammatory Medications (e.g., Ibuprofen): These interfere with the natural inflammatory process essential for skin rejuvenation.
Waxing or Depilatory Creams on the Treatment Area
Notes
Psoriasis and other dermatoses that can be koebnerised may be triggered by needling, even if they have been quiescent for years.
Recovery Time
Understanding the recovery timeline can help you prepare for what to expect:
60 Minutes: Reddening and possible pinpoint bleeding.
Up to 24 Hours: Erythema (redness or rash-like appearance), petechiae (small red spots), minor edema (swelling).
1-2 Days: Mild erythema, petechiae, reduced edema, minor itching, dry/tight sensation.
2-3 Days: Reduced erythema, fading petechiae, dissipated edema, reduced itching, minor skin flaking.
3-4 Days: Potential dryness.
4-5 Days: Full recovery with normal function.
3 Weeks: Improved pigmentation begins.
4-6 Weeks: Improvements in lines, wrinkles, and scarring begin.
Aftercare
Proper aftercare ensures the best results from your treatment. For up to 2 days following a microneedling procedure, avoid:
Direct ultraviolet exposure (sun and sunbeds).
Intensive cardio, exercise, or gym regimens.
Excessively hot showers, baths, spas, or saunas.
Swimming in chlorinated pools or the ocean.
Tattooing (including cosmetic tattooing).
Further clinical treatments (e.g., microdermabrasion, laser, intense pulsed light, chemical peels, muscle relaxant injections, and dermal fillers) for up to 2 weeks.
For up to 5 days post-procedure, avoid skincare products containing:
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) (e.g., glycolic, lactic, or malic acid).
Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) (e.g., salicylic acid).
Benzoyl Peroxide.
Retinoids (e.g., tretinoin, retinol, and retinaldehyde).
Hydroquinone.
High levels of Kojic or Azelaic Acid.
Alcohol (e.g., isopropyl alcohol/de-natured alcohol/rubbing alcohol).
Do not apply spray tans or fake tan creams for 2-3 weeks post-treatment. If in doubt, contact us for clarification.
Homecare
For the first 1-3 days, your skin may feel tight and dry. Frequent use of post-session topical products will help. Light, non-occlusive, and non-comedogenic makeup may be applied 24 hours post-procedure, and SPF is advised for at least 3 days post-treatment.
After 2-3 days, you can return to your regular skincare products, excluding the ones listed above. Low-dose Vitamin A products are recommended. Avoid direct sunlight and always wear SPF30 or above. Do not apply chemical sunscreen on the same day as the treatment; only approved physical defense sunscreen can be used.
Microneedling stimulates collagen, and your skin benefits from higher amounts of collagen for optimal results. Collagen-stimulating peptides assist in this process. Hydrate before and after the procedure to help your skin heal and rejuvenate faster. Gently exfoliate your skin after 3-5 days to remove flaky skin. Omega-3, Zinc, and glucosamine oral supplements can enhance your treatment results.
By understanding and following these guidelines, you can ensure your treatment is as effective and safe as possible. Always consult with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.
